2.1. Columbus's project Christopher Columbus, a navigator believed to be from Genoa, thought he could reach the Spice Islands by crossing the Atlantic. He knew the Earth was round but he thought that it was much smaller. He did not know that the continent of America existed. Columbus presented his project to the Catholic Monarchs.
